VAN — Van High’s David Stewart and Hunter McMicken each rushed for over 100 yards and Van High earned a homecoming win over Hannan at Herschel Jarrell Field on Friday night, 31-6.
Stewart threw a 26-yard TD strike to Kalen Booth to start the scoring off in the first quarter, followed by a 4-yard dive from McMicken. The Bulldogs (3-5) took a 12-0 lead to the locker room at the half.
“We played a little better on offense this week, but we are still making some mental mistakes,” said Van head coach Steve “Foot” Price. “Our defense played well but we gave up a couple of big plays down the field that thankfully didn’t hurt us.”
Stewart also scored on a run in the second half and McMicken added another run from inside the 10 for a TD.
McMicken notched runs of 10 and 21 yards on a decisive drive in the third quarter, which led to scores.
“He ran hard and we gave him the ball tonight because David (Stewart) is a little banged up and we were trying to rest him a little. He still made a big impact on the game with the reduced carries he had.”
Hannan (1-7) didn’t find the end zone until less than 3 minutes in the game, when a long pass completion set up a score from inside the 10-yard line.
“We played hard and we made some personnel moves on the line that seemed to help some as we just shifted some guys around,” Price added. “Our last two games are against good teams, so we have to step up and play better than we have in all phases of the game.”
Van will host Buffalo on Friday and wrap up their regular season at Richwood.
