Phil Perry/Coal Valley News - Van's David Stewart rushed for 154 yards and a pair of TDs, including the winning one versus Paden City on Friday night.

VAN – All-County running back/receiver David Stewart scored on a 2-yard run with just 22 seconds on the game clock and thanks to a timely 2-yard pass thrown from Brady Green to Joseph Stewart on the 2-point conversion, Van squeaked out a 23-18 victory over Paden City in front of their home crowd.

The plays were set up by three consecutive pass completions from quarterback Kalen Booth which included a 27-yard strike to Jacob Jarrell.

Van (1-2) took a 10-0 lead in the first half thanks to a 25-yard touchdown pass from Booth to Joseph Stewart followed by a 28-yard field goal from Frank Bergqvist. 

Paden City (0-3) hit pay dirt on a 62-yard pass play from quarterback Ethan Cross to Zane Yeater to end the half with Van clinging to a 9-6 lead.

In the third, Paden City struck first after sustaining a drive and they punched the ball in again on a 4-yard quarterback keeper from Cross.

David Stewart then capped off a 3-minute Van drive with a 4-yard score of his own to make the score 15-12, Bulldog lead.

It was another drive and score from Paden City, another run from Cross that set up Van’s offensive heroics at the end of the game.

David Stewart netted 154 yards rushing in the game and a pair of scores. Booth went 7-for-9 through the air for 145 yards and a TD. Green went 4-of-8 for 38 yards.

Slade Adams had 7 tackles, Frank Bergqvist had 7 tackles and a forced fumble, Joe Stewart had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery, Ethan Coleman had 6 tackles, Kalen Booth had 5 tackles, David Stewart had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery and Hunter McMicken had 4 tackles.

Van will host Tug Valley on Sept. 20.
