WELCH — Sherman High traveled to Welch on Oct. 2 to help the Mount View Golden Knights usher in a new era of Class A football in the new Vic Nystrom Stadium. The quad from Welch broke in the new digs with style in the form of a 55-28 win.

Mount View (1-3) scored on its first five possessions of the game to set the tone early and put Sherman behind the 8-ball.

“We didn’t play well early on either side of the ball and dug ourselves a 25-0 hole,” said Tide Coach Michael Showalter. “We were eventually able to get on the scoreboard before they hit some explosive plays to open it back up. They had a lot of speed and used that to hit several explosive big plays. We allowed them to get confidence and momentum early on and they were able to keep that going all night.”

For the night, the Golden Knights accumulated 539 yards of total offense, with 286 rushing and 253 more in the air.

Sherman quarterback Davy Jarrell put the Tide on the board at the 10:50 mark of the second quarter on an 8-yard run to the strong side before passing to TJ Hager for the two-point conversion.

Jarrell’s second dash for a score cut the deficit to 31-14 after he plowed into the end zone with 42 ticks showing before halftime.

On the Tide’s opening possession of the second half, Jarrell launched a 50-yard TD strike down the right sideline to Hager to bring Sherman within 9 points after the senior signal caller threw to Hager for the extra points with 11:16 left in the third frame.

Sherman’s leading rusher Junior CJ Winnell, who ran 27 times for 127 yards in the game for the Tide (2-2), reeled off a 10-yard scoring play with 4:32 showing in the third to cut the Knight’s lead back to 43-28.

It would be all the points the Tide would muster on this night as Mount View put the clamps on Sherman in the fourth period to seal the first win in their new stadium.

Sherman would host cross-county rival Van on Oct. 16 for the annual “Showdown for the Shovel,” providing the teams are permitted to play based on the COVID-19 color-coded school reentry map.
