Kalen Booth prepares to deliver a pitch for Van High. Booth pitched in relief in a sectional win over Tolsia on June 4.

FORT GAY — Van High School’s baseball team used a good pitching outing that included 10 strikeouts from Shaun Booth and an offensive onslaught to down Tolsia High in Class A Region 4 Section 1 play on Friday.

The Bulldogs’ biggest inning came in the third frame when they scored five runs.

With Brady Green and Shaun Booth on base, Isaiah Perdue stroked a single to plate both base runners. Josh Marcum walked to push Perdue across the plate.

The inning was capped off by a timely hit from Patrick Frame, who plated Nick Chambers and Chris Price; Van led 6-0 and would not relinquish the lead.

Van Coach Dave Gogas said his squad played well at every position.

“It was a real team effort and we put the ball in play across the lineup, and Shaun Booth threw strikes for us on the mound,” he said. “I’m very proud of this team and their effort.”

Isaiah Perdue walked to start the fifth, where more fireworks happened for Van.

Nick Chambers singled, then advanced to second on an error on the throw and then alertly took third. Perdue scored through the process.

Marcum singled home Chambers to cap off the inning for Van.

The Bulldogs pulled out three regular-season wins late in the 2021 campaign to show growth from their early season woes and became more competitive as the season advanced.

Shaun Booth got the win for the Bulldogs. The sophomore hurler surrendered three runs on three hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out ten.

Preston Adams and Kalen Booth entered the game out of the bullpen and kept the Rebels at bay to close out the contest.

Dusty Bailey took the loss for Tolsia. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on four hits and striking out three.

Frame, Shaun Booth, Chambers, Adams, Brady Green, Perdue, Price, Marcum, and Kalen Booth each managed one hit to lead Van. Watts went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Tolsia in hits.

Van advances to play Sherman on June 5 at Seth. Both teams are (1-1) in sectional play.

NOTE: Van fell to Sherman 19-0 on June 5 and were eliminated from sectional play.
